25 per cent of new immigrants originated in India India remains Canada’s number one source country for newcomers. Approximately 86,000 Indians who have become permanent residents in 2019 accounted for 25% of all new comers to Canada. China was a distant second, accounting for 9 percent of newcomers, followed by the Philippines, accounting for 8 percent of new immigrants. Nigeria, the United States of America, Pakistan, Syria, Eritrea, South Korea and Iran have rounded out the top 10 source countries. The approval rates for the H1- B visa program has decreased under the administration of President Donald Trump. This led to Indian nationals living in the U.S. electing to apply for permanent residence in Canada.
Boris Johnson’s government has introduced its plan to forego the ‘exceptional talent’ visa scheme introducing the new ‘Global Talent Visa’ program. The initial ‘exceptional talent’ visa scheme held a cap of 2,000 applicants. However, the requirement was never accomplished. The new Skilled Employer-Sponsored Regional(Provisional) visa (subclass 494) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) have started on 16 November 2019.
